A Transverse Myelitis Patients’ Success with BalanceWear Vest: “I do not need my cane; I never lose my balance and have more energy and freedom to live my busy life.”

May 9, 2020

In March, Lucrecia Johnson, a 74year-old who works at their Goodyear tire shop in Clarendon, PA contacted Motion Therapeutics to let us know her story and express thanks for the invention of BalanceWear. Kudo’s!

Lucrecia reported, “In the beginning of September 2019, I saw an orthopedic doctor due to funny feelings in MY feet. They prescribed shoe orthotics. By the end of September, I had an x-ray. The beginning of October I couldn’t walk without a walker and ended up at St Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA. and had more x-rays and an MRI. I received the bad news that I had Transverse Myelitis Oct 2nd and met Dr. Hasan Askari, a neurologist. I had 6 corticosteroid injections over the next few days and was released to my home October 6th.

My symptoms were numbness from my hips to my feet on both sides. My feet felt like I had wax paper on the bottom.”

“After the hospital I returned home walking with a walker. I saw a local Physical Therapist, Melissa Lemay (Darling Health Care) in Warren, PA. with the goal of walking with a cane. She was great!  We worked on my walking and strengthening.  I realized that goal in two weeks.

I was still using a cane when I went to see Dr. Askari in December. To be honest I said to my daughter, I wonder if this is worth the two-hour drive to and from Erie. When we got there, I looked at my daughter as he started nudging me in many directions, wondering…., what is going on?!!!!

Then he placed light weights on a vest in very specific locations and within the session I was walking without my cane!

Dr. Askari ordered a BalanceWear® OW200 vest through Bay City Ortho Care. I picked up the BalanceWear vest the beginning of February. By that time the numbness had subsided in my thighs but still remained in my feet leaving me with peripheral neuropathy.

On the way out of the office wearing the BalanceWear vest Dr. Askari said to me, Lucrecia are you forgetting something? I turned around and he was holding my cane😊”

“I have been wearing the BalanceWear Vest from the moment I get up until I go to bed. I take it off for showers and bed time only. I do not need my cane; I never lose my balance and have more energy and freedom to live my busy life.”

Thank you to Motion Therapeutics, Dr. Askari, and Bay City Orthocare.

– Lucrecia Johnson, Pennsylvania, Transverse Myelitis
