I have a patient with Sjogren’s Syndrome (https://sjogrens.org). She has been having more falls because of neuropathy in her feet. This gal has been a patient of mine before and did not think that physical therapy was anything that was going to help her more, but her doctors insisted. I started her on a few exercises and then we talked about the BalanceWear vest. She agreed to try it.
She is very active and has good strength. She goes to a Yoga class. I let her wear a donor balance vest to see how she would do over several days and she told me that she was doing so much better that her instructor and others in the Yoga class were asking her how she was improving so quickly. The instructor actually asked her to address the whole class to tell her story! She is so happy!
When she was in last Friday, she mentioned that her husband had asked her if this maybe wasn’t just in her head because he couldn’t believe that such a small amount of weight in a vest could make that much difference. I think she was starting to question it herself.
So, I had her walk and do some standing balance exercises. Then I removed the weights from the balance vest and had her do them again. It’s when I put the weights back on the vest that she realized how much more stable she actually was when she did the exercises.
She hugged me and started to cry. It was awesome!
